Eco-friendly kieserite blasting for spotless pool tiles and water features
What Is Kieserite Pool Tile Cleaning?
Kieserite blasting is a specialized cleaning method that restores the original look of your pool tiles, stone, and water features by safely removing calcium, scale, and mineral buildup—without damaging the surface or harming your pool’s chemistry.
How It Works
We use Kieserite, a naturally occurring mineral (magnesium sulfate) that’s water-soluble and pH-neutral. It’s a gentle yet effective alternative to harsh chemicals or abrasive materials like glass beads or sand.
During the process, a stream of pressurized air and Kieserite particles is directed at the affected areas. The Kieserite crystals lift and break apart the calcium deposits while leaving tile, grout, and decorative rock intact. Kieserite is harder than the calcium, but softer than the tile, grout or decorative rock.
Once the blasting is complete, the media will dissolve in water over the course of the day and/or potentially the next few days if the used kieserite has accumulated on the bottom of your pool. This accumulation is a direct result of the amount of calcium build up you had on your tiles. The heavier the calcium buildup, the more kieserite will be need to be used, which then can cause it to accumulate on the bottom of your pool. That accumulation can be vacuumed up by the pool owner and/or their pool service after the water level returns above the skimmer, which can take several hours, and the pool pump can be turned on and return to its normal operating cycle.
Why Kieserite?
Safe for all surfaces – Ideal for ceramic, glass, and stone tiles.
Eco-friendly – 100% water-soluble, non-toxic, and gentle on your pool’s ecosystem.
No harsh acids – Prevents etching, pitting, or discoloration of tiles and grout.
Quick and clean – Leaves no residue and restores shine immediately.
Pool-ready the same day – Because Kieserite dissolves naturally, there’s no long downtime or chemical rebalancing required.
The Result
Your pool, spa, or water feature will look renewed and refreshed—free of calcium lines, scale, and buildup—restoring the sparkle and elegance that make your backyard the perfect place to relax and entertain.
Catalina Pool Tile Cleaning Five Step Process:
1. Inspect and Assess
We start by inspecting your pool tiles to assess the buildup of calcium and determine the tile type and condition and in order to properly begin the cleaning process.
2. Preparation
Before starting the cleaning process, we turn your pool pump system off, and then prepare the pool area by lowering the water level just below the tiles to allow full access to the tile surface.
3. Calcium Removal
Using a combination of Kieserite and specialized tools, we remove calcium deposits, algae, and other contaminants from your pool tiles. Our methods are safe for all tile types, including ceramic, glass, and natural stone.
4. Final Rinse and Cleanup
After cleaning, we thoroughly rinse the tiles to remove any remaining residue, though some may still reside on the tiles, which can be easily washed off by additional rinses. We begin to fill your pool at this point to ensure your water level returns to its normal height as soon as possible in order to return your pool pump its normal operating cycle(s). Your float/autofill valve can also accomplish this but it will take much longer to accomplish. If we can vacuum up any potential kieserite accumulation, we will, but that will depend on the water level, pump, etc. At this point we rinse and clean the area like it was when we arrived prior to departing.
5. Back to Normal Operation.
Once the water level is approximately mid-tile level, which can take several hours after our departure, and when it is above the skimmer, the pool owner can turn off the external water and then turn the pool pump back on. At this point we recommend you start a cleaning cycle, and vacuum up any potential accumulated kieserite on the pool floor (or you can wait for your pool service to vacuum it up). You also can just wait for the kieserite to dissolve as the pool goes through additional cleaning cycles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What causes the white, chalky buildup on my pool tiles?
That white residue—often called a “waterline” or “scale”—is calcium buildup from hard water evaporation. As water evaporates, minerals like calcium and magnesium crystallize and bond to your tile, rock, or grout, creating tough deposits that need professional removal.
Is your tile cleaning process safe for my pool surface and water?
Absolutely. We use Kieserite blasting, a gentle, water-soluble mineral cleaning method that safely removes calcium and scale without scratching tiles, harming grout, or changing your pool’s water chemistry. Kieserite is pH-neutral and completely dissolves in water, leaving your pool clean and balanced.
What is Kieserite blasting, and how does it work?
Kieserite is a natural mineral (magnesium sulfate) that gently lifts and dissolves calcium deposits using pressurized air and fine mineral particles. Unlike acid washes or glass bead blasting, Kieserite cleaning is non-toxic, non-abrasive, and environmentally friendly—making it the safest and most effective method available.
Can I clean the tile myself instead of hiring a professional?
Light brushing between professional cleanings helps reduce buildup, but once calcium hardens, it bonds to the tile surface. DIY scrubbing with pumice, razors, or harsh acids can scratch tile, damage grout, and alter water chemistry. Our professional Kieserite process removes buildup safely and completely.
How long does the cleaning process take?
Most pool tile cleaning jobs take 3 to 5 hours, depending on pool size and buildup. We’ll assess your pool beforehand and provide an estimated timeline before work begins.
Is the process safe for all types of tile?
Yes. Kieserite blasting is safe for ceramic, glass, porcelain, and natural stone tiles, as well as most water features and rock surfaces. Because it’s softer than tile, it effectively removes buildup without scratching or dulling the finish.
Do you need to drain my pool before cleaning?
No. We simply lower the water level a few inches below the tile line to access the area for cleaning. Once the job is complete, we rinse thoroughly and begin to restore the water level to normal, which may take several hours.
How do I know it’s time for a cleaning?
If you notice white calcium lines, dull or discolored tiles, or stains around your waterline or features, it’s time for professional service. Early cleaning prevents long-term damage and restores your pool’s shine.
Will tile cleaning affect my pool’s water chemistry?
No. Kieserite is pH-neutral and fully water-soluble, so it won’t cloud your water or affect chlorine balance. We always rinse the area thoroughly so your pool can be ready for use shortly after you normal water level is restored.
Do you offer tile sealing after cleaning?
While our primary focus is cleaning, we can recommend sealing options depending on your tile type and exposure. A quality sealant can help reduce future buildup and extend the time between cleanings.
How often should I have my pool tiles professionally cleaned?
In Arizona’s hard-water climate, we recommend professional tile cleaning every 18 to 24 months to prevent calcium buildup and keep your pool looking new. Homes with very hard water or frequent pool use may benefit from more frequent cleanings.
Can professional tile cleaning improve my pool’s hygiene?
Definitely. Removing calcium, algae, and scale not only enhances appearance but also reduces bacteria growth and improves overall water quality—making your pool safer and more enjoyable.
